MLB insider sees Astros Slugger as biggest beneficiary of 2023 rule changes

MLB recently announced a series of rule changes coming to the Majors in 2023. While a 15-second pitch clock and larger bases caught the eye of some fans, one of the biggest changes is the elimination of defense change.

Many players stand to benefit from the shift rule change, especially when it comes to left-handed hitters. AthleticismHouston’s Eno Sarris lists Houston Astros slugger Kyle Tucker as one of the biggest beneficiaries of the upcoming defensive changes.

When the 2023 MLB season begins, clubs must have two infielders on either side of second base before a pitch is thrown. Additionally, there must be at least four players with their feet on the inbounds boundary, which should work to Tucker’s advantage.

Tucker faced the change in a career-high 90.4% of plate appearances in 2022, according to baseball scholar. It’s worked against him more often than not, as evidenced by his base weighted average (wOBA) of 0.341 when a change is in effect versus his wOBA of 0.471 when there isn’t.

Sarris lists Tucker’s batting average on ground balls in the middle at .405 – a number that is expected to rise without the change. Considering how the first All-Star has recorded 29 home runs and 102 RBIs with that change this season, fans might get a glimpse of his full potential next year.

Ultimately, there are still several months before these rules come into effect. In the meantime, Tuckers is focused on helping the Astros win their first World Series title since 2017.

The Astros have a huge chance of winning the 2022 World Series, according to FanDuel Sportsbook’s MLB odds. Their +400 odds of winning the title are only the Los Angeles Dodgers, who sit in first place at +290.
