The beneficiary travel self-service system allows veterans to be paid more quickly for travel expenses. See the following questions and answers to learn more:

What is VA Travel Reimbursement? Reimbursement of VA travel benefits through the Beneficiary Travel Program reimburses eligible veterans for mileage and other authorized travel expenses to and from approved health care appointments.

What is BTSSS? The Beneficiary Self-Service Travel System is the new, faster way for eligible Veterans to receive reimbursement for their travel expenses.

How do I know if I am eligible?

VA offers two types of travel reimbursement: general health care travel and special mode transportation. As a veteran, you may be eligible for one or both. If you meet the criteria below, you may be eligible if you: • Have a service connection rating of 30% or higher. • Traveling for treatment of a service-related condition. • Receive a VA pension, or your income does not exceed the maximum annual VA pension. • Traveling for a scheduled compensation or pension review. • Have visual impairment, spinal cord injury or disorder, double or multiple amputations, enrollment in VA rehabilitation programs.

What are the benefits of BTSSS? • Access 24 hours a day, every day • Fast payments • Direct deposit • Track claims anytime

What’s the difference with the paper forms and kiosks once used to file travel expense claims? BTSSS is an online self-reporting system that eliminates the delays created by paper forms and kiosks. An updated profile is required to file a claim online and to process previously submitted newsstand and paper claims. Filing travel claims electronically with BTSSS and using direct deposit allows for the fastest possible payment.

I have never used BTSSS. How do we do it? Visit access.va.gov and select the Veterans Travel Reimbursement Application Entry icon to get started. You can then choose to log in using a DS-Logon Level 2 account, with a VA PIV card, with ID.me, or your My HealtheVet credentials.

Should I use BTSSS to file a claim? No. But it is strongly encouraged. Eligible veterans and caregivers can also file VA Form 10-3542 to request travel expense reimbursement.

If paper claims are an option, why should I switch to BTSSS? The BTSSS is strongly encouraged because:

Combining electronic filing and direct deposit is the fastest way to get reimbursed.

BTSSS provides an easy way to check the status of a travel claim.

When a Veteran submits a paper application, the beneficiary’s travel team must manually load and process this application in BTSSS for the Veteran. It takes much longer to process this way, resulting in large backlogs and increasing the wait time to get paid for all veterans filing this way.

Logging into BTSSS is easy with one of three methods – credentials for ID.me, My HealtheVet, or a Level 2 DS-Logon account.
